How resellers really lose their marketplace accounts

Losing a selling account is the worst thing that can happen to a reseller, because unlike almost every other setback it is frequently permanent and frequently not appealable. It is worth understanding what actually causes it, because the common worries and the common causes are not the same list.

What actually does it

Cancellations and failures to ship. This is the big one. Platforms care enormously about whether a buyer gets what they paid for, and a pattern of cancellations is read as unreliability regardless of your reasons. This is the main practical argument for keeping your listed inventory and your real inventory in agreement.

Behaving like a program. Bursts of activity faster than a person could plausibly produce get accounts flagged, throttled and sometimes removed. This is not about intent — a legitimate seller listing a large batch as fast as the interface allows can trip the same detection as a bad actor.

This is why bulk crossposting in Reskale is paced on purpose rather than as fast as technically possible. Speed that gets your account restricted is not speed.

Automating a platform that forbids it. Terms differ, and some platforms treat any automation as grounds for removal regardless of how careful it is. The loss is unrecoverable, which is why we gate certain marketplaces out of automation entirely rather than offering it with a warning. A feature that can cost you your business is not a feature.

Item condition disputes, repeatedly. One unhappy buyer is noise. A pattern of items arriving worse than described is a signal, and it is read as deliberate.

What people worry about that matters less

Occasional returns. A single negative review. Slow sales. Low volume. Being new. None of these are account risks, and anxiety about them tends to crowd out attention on the things above.

The practical version

  • Keep listed inventory and real inventory in agreement, so you are never cancelling for stock you do not have
  • Pace bulk activity, even when you are in a hurry
  • Photograph flaws honestly, because disputes are both expensive and cumulative
  • Do not automate a platform that does not allow it, whatever tooling claims to make it safe
  • Ship on time, every time, because this is the metric that carries the most weight

The asymmetry worth internalising

Almost every other mistake in reselling is recoverable. You can re-earn money, re-source inventory, re-learn pricing. An account built over years can disappear in an afternoon and take its sales history, its search standing and its reviews with it.

That asymmetry justifies being more conservative here than anywhere else in the business.
