Product photos for resale without a studio

Photographs decide more sales than descriptions do, and almost all of the improvement available to most listings is free. You do not need lights, a backdrop stand or a better camera. You need a window and a repeatable routine.

The setup

One window, no direct sun. Soft daylight from the side is the most flattering light there is and it costs nothing. Direct sun creates hard shadows and blows out detail; an overcast day is genuinely better than a bright one.

Turn the room light off. Mixing daylight with a warm bulb gives you colours that are wrong in a way phone cameras cannot correct, and colour accuracy is the single most common cause of returns on clothing.

A plain wall or a sheet. Light grey or off-white. Pure white is harder than it looks because cameras tend to grey it, and a busy background makes the item hard to read in a feed.

The six shots

The same six, every time, so it becomes muscle memory rather than a decision:

  • The whole item, front, filling most of the frame
  • The whole item, back
  • The brand label
  • The size or care label
  • A close shot of the material or texture
  • Every flaw, individually and honestly

That last one feels like it costs sales. It prevents returns, and a return costs several sales. Photograph the flaw clearly, mention it in the description, and the buyer who still buys is a buyer who is not surprised.

The two mistakes worth naming

Shooting from too far away and cropping later. You lose detail you cannot get back. Fill the frame when you take the picture.

Shooting at an angle. Hold the camera square to the item. Perspective distortion makes garments look misshapen and is the main reason home photos read as amateur even when the lighting is fine.

Why consistency beats quality

A set of listings shot the same way looks like a shop. The same listings shot in different rooms at different times of day look like a pile of unrelated things, even if any individual photo is better.

Pick your window, pick your wall, pick your six shots, and do not redesign it. The goal is that photographing an item takes four minutes and requires no thought, because the items you do not get around to listing earn nothing at all.
